Encoders for Elevators: Door Operators, Traction Machines and Service

Elevator components run one of the hardest duty cycles in automation: hundreds of starts and stops a day, wide temperature swings, dust in shaftways, and maintenance windows measured in minutes. The feedback encoder takes that punishment while position has to stay accurate and safe on every cycle.

Why absolute feedback for door operators

Door operators cycle hundreds of times a day. Position has to be accurate at every point in the travel — open, close, and the intermediate speeds that control closing force. An absolute encoder knows position instantly on power-up, so the door does not need to re-learn its travel after a power event, and it does not drift when the operator is idle.

Traction machines and hoist feedback

On traction machines, the encoder reports rotor position to the drive for torque control and speed regulation. The environment includes vibration, heat from the motor, and occasional condensation. Inductive encoders — no glass disc, no LED — hold accuracy in exactly these conditions, where optical feedback can degrade.

What to specify

For elevator duty, look for: absolute multi-position readout (17-bit or better), accuracy of 0.001° or better, IP67 ingress protection, an operating range of at least -40 to +85 °C, and a serial interface that matches your drive (BISS-C, SSI or RS485/Tamagawa). If the door operator runs on limited power, check sleep current as well.

Replacement and service considerations

For service companies, the practical question is whether the encoder can be adapted to the shaft, cable and connector of the models you maintain — and whether every replacement unit comes with measured test data. Factory-direct supply with adaptation capability keeps service stock simple.
